Uncertain, but probably an extension of *weraz with the suffix +‎ *-ud-, also seen in *hafudą, *haliþaz (oblique stem), *hakudaz.

In pre-Germanic, the word declined as *wérut- in the strong cases and *werít- in the weak/oblique cases.


Descendants edit

In North Germanic the word was masculinized and saw the generalization of oblique stem *wiriþ- to the paradigm. It is attested only in the plural.
