editAccording to Beekes, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂weyd-,[1] similar to Sanskrit वदति (vadati, “to say, speak”) and Proto-Slavic *vaditi (“to argue; scold”). Also compare the verb *awéidō (“to sing”).
