From earlier *θeiljos, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁i-l-yo-s (sucker), from *dʰeh₁(y)- (to suckle, nurse). Cognate with Ancient Greek θῆλυς (thêlus, feminine). Displaced *suHnús.
