edit

Traditionally thought to be from Proto-Indo-European *ḱerh₂weyk-s, a compound of *ḱerh₂- and the root noun of *weyk-, literally "where the head turns." But there is no Italic cognates outside of Latin have been supplied, and per De Vaan, this etymology "is semantically very doubtful".
