From Proto-Indo-European *wi-n-k-, nasal infix from *weyk- (to overcome), whence also Gothic 𐍅𐌴𐌹𐌷𐌰𐌽 (weihan, to fight) and Old Church Slavonic вѣкъ (věkŭ, age, long period of time).
