Ultimately from Proto-Afroasiatic *sṗɣ (seven). Compare with Egyptian sfḫw and Proto-Berber *saβ (whence Central Atlas Tamazight ⵙⴰ (sa)). It is often theorized to be the source for Proto-Indo-European *septḿ̥.
