Etymology edit

From Proto-Indo-European *gʷel- (to dribble, to gush forth, spring). Akin to Proto-West Germanic *kwalljā (spring, well).

In Slovene, the outcome of the proto-Slavic verb (nowadays obsolete) has merged/been supplanted by the similarly sounding German borrowing žlampáti (to gulp, to swallow noisily) < German schlampen.
