Proto-Slavic edit

Etymology edit

Subclass of the broader suffix *-nikъ, particularly formed on the basis of the past passive participle suffix *-anъ +‎ *-ikъ.

Suffix edit

*-anikъ m

  1. From verbs in a-conjugation, predominantly forms agent nouns.
*posъlati (to send an envoy) + ‎*-anikъ → ‎*posъlanikъ (envoy)
    *pomazati (to anoint) + ‎*-anikъ → ‎*pomazanikъ (anointed person)
*jьzbьrati (to choose, to select) + ‎*-anikъ → ‎*jьzbьranikъ (elected person)
    *jьzgъnati (to chase away) + ‎*-anikъ → ‎*jьzgъnanikъ (exile)

Usage notes edit

  • Less productive.
  • In many cases, the derivation feels more natural if one applies *-ikъ directly onto the participle (X-anъX-anikъ).
