Etymology edit

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *ganētei. Cognate with Lithuanian ganėti (to suffice). Perhaps derived from an earlier adverb Proto-Balto-Slavic *ganāˀ (enough) +‎ *-ěti, whence Lithuanian ganà (enough, rather). Further origin uncertain (possibly from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰen- (to strike)).
