Etymology edit

Uncertain. Possibly from the sparsely attested Proto-Slavic *kobti (to grasp, to forecast), *kobati (to compete) + *-ьcь, of expressive nature from Proto-Indo-European *kabʰ- (to seize, to hold). Resembles Proto-Germanic *habukaz (hawk), Albanian gabonjë (eagle).
