Reconstruction:Proto-Slavic/odolěnъ
Proto-Slavic edit
Etymology edit
From *odolěti (“to defeat, to discomfit”) + *-nъ, so called because of its use to vanquish diseases. One can see its motivation in Latin valeriana understood as from valēre (“to be strong (sc. against an ailment)”). Roger Bernard even reports a Slavo-Latinate hybridism Odeljanus.
