From Proto-Balto-Slavic *śáiˀnas, probably from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱéh₃y-ō ~ *(s)ḱih₃-nés (shade, shadow) (alternatively reconstructed as *sḱeh₂(y)-). Akin to Proto-Indo-Iranian *śćaHyáH (shadow), Ancient Greek σκιά (skiá, shadow).
