From Proto-Germanic *fadurwijô, from Proto-Indo-European *ph₂tr̥wyos (paternal uncle). Equivalent to *fader (father) +‎ *-jō. Cognate with Latin patruus, Sanskrit पितृव्य (pitṛvya), and Classical Persian افدر (afdar, paternal uncle).
