Etymology edit
Uncertain; possibly from Proto-Indo-European *yerḱ-. Compare Ancient Greek ἴυρκες (íurkes), δορκάς (dorkás), δόρξ (dórx) ~ ζόρξ (zórx) ~ ἴορξ (íorx), etc., Latin hircus, ircus, Old Armenian որս (ors), Welsh iwrch, but note the many unexplained phonetic variations.[1]
