From Proto-Turkic *er- (to be).[1] Cognate with Azerbaijani *imək, Old Turkic 𐰼 (er-), Turkish *imek.

Defective, only exists in present perfect tense ekan (also irregular, with unvoiced -k- instead of -g-), past edi, negative indefinite future emas, and conditional esa. The present form is erur. This verb has the inferential emish, are the only verb which has the function.
