Reconstruction talk:Proto-Indo-European/bʰelǵ-
Descendants of the reflex *bʰleǵ-
editI looked here and there, and apparently Ancient Greek φλέγω (phlégō, “I burn”), Sanskrit भ्रज (bhrája, “fire, shining”), Latin flagrō (“to blaze”), and possibly Proto-Slavic *blazniti (“to lurk, to bamboozle”) (check Trubachyov, Oleg, editor (1975), “*blazniti (sę)”, in Этимологический словарь славянских языков [Etymological dictionary of Slavic languages] (in Russian), numbers 2 (*bez – *bratrъ), Moscow: Nauka, page 103) technically originate from *bʰleǵ- a metathesis of *bʰelǵ- (a.k.a. schwebeablaut). For reference, check *bʰleǵ- in LIV, p. 86. Both forms are ǵ-extensions of *bʰel- (“to shine, to bell, to blow, to swell, to beat”) /which, I think, is best to be translated as to overwhelm/, but clearly their meanings are different. So, should we add them in the current entry or it's better to create an independent thread? Bezimenen (talk) 17:49, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
balk, beam
editGiven that these two English verbs have multiple meanings, it would be useful to give a little extra clarification as to which of those meanings is actually intended. Rhialto (talk) 08:19, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
