First attested as richeim in 822-825. Borrowed from West Frisian Reitsum, in turn derived from a compound of a variant of Old Frisian Reitse (“a personal name”) or Proto-Germanic *rîkja- (“powerful, mighty”) and hēm (“home, settlement”).
