Etymology edit

First attested as Roeven in 1826. Potentially a compound of a dialectal variant of ruig (“rough, uncultivated”) and ven (“peat bog”). The first element has also been interpreted as a term meaning "reed". Compare Rokkeveen, Rouveen, Rucphen, Ruiven and Rukven.
