Etymology edit

First attested as Roeven in 1826. Potentially a compound of a dialectal variant of ruig (rough, uncultivated) and ven (peat bog). The first element has also been interpreted as a term meaning "reed". Compare Rokkeveen, Rouveen, Rucphen, Ruiven and Rukven.
