Etymology edit

Potentially attested as senieda in the 13th century, attested with certainty as schemede in 1391. Etymology uncertain. Proposed derivations include a compound of Old Saxon schem (“plank bridge”) or Old Frisian *scald (“wetland, shallows”) and made (“pasture”) or a derivation from Old Saxon schem suffixed with the collectivising suffix *-iþi.
