Dutch
editEtymology
editFirst attested as groningi in the 10th or 11th century. Etymology uncertain. Potentially derived from Old Dutch Grôn (“a personal name”) or Groni (“a personal name”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ing-. A derivation from a hydronym *Gron suffixed with -ing- is less likely. Compare Groeningen.
The province was named after the city.
