Etymology edit
A hydronym, attested in Medieval Latin as Tamega. An *-ikos suffixed form, from a pre-Roman substrate of Iberia, probably from Proto-Celtic, from Proto-Indo-European *temH- (“dark”); or alternatively from Proto-Celtic *tā-,[1] *tāyo- (“to melt, flow”), from Proto-Indo-European *teh₂- (“to melt”).[2] See also Thames.
