Arabic ṣandūq

edit

We have “a kind of casket, box” here. While I do not know about the frequency of the Greek word, the similarity to Arabic صَنْدُوق (ṣandūq) is striking. Has the Arabic been borrowed from Greek in antiquity? Or is there a connection via Iranian? (As we know, Beekes often attributes Pre-Greek origin carelessly ignoring cognates by which an Oriental origin must be assumed.) Because the etymology currently at the Arabic isn’t one. “The root ص ن د ق (ṣ-n-d-q)” isn’t anything – if anything, it would be ص د ق (ṣ-d-q). @Profes.I.
