Etymology
editI think the obvious candidate for the origin of this word is the Arabic حِمَار (ḥimār). See Մեր արմատները նոր լոյսի տակ (Ուրիշեան, 1998). Սէրուժ (talk) 19:20, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
- That is suggested already by Patrubány and rejected by Ačaṙean because of the date of attestation. Also, յ (y) does not correspond to Semitic ḥ. Still, I added the theory. --Vahag (talk) 20:35, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks Vahagn. «Ընթ ըհմար» ("you're a fool") is a common saying in Arabic. And the connection by Armenians in the Levant to յիմար is natural. If it's not from Arabic directly, then it probably is from a common ancestor. Սէրուժ (talk) 02:49, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
- The Syriac cognate of the Arabic word too has the metaphorical meaning of "fool", but again the y ~ ḥ correspondence is difficult to surmount. We cannot compare the հ- (h-) of modern հիմար (himar). --Vahag (talk) 11:10, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
