@Gubazes: it does not have an accepted etymology as far as I'm aware (certainly not in mainstream sources). Klimov considers Laz მაყაყი (maqaqi) to be borrowed from Georgian, but eh... კვარია (talk) 14:47, 28 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Both the Georgian and the Laz look like onomatopoeic words. Neisser connects Georgian ბაყაყი (baq̇aq̇i) with ბაყბაყი (baq̇baq̇i, to quack) as a reduplicated formation. According to this, მაყაყი (maq̇aq̇i) developed from ბაყაყი (baq̇aq̇i). Vahag (talk) 17:39, 28 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
