The redlink form *selbawiljijaz
editMay I suggest the redlink form *selbawiljijaz is unlikely, with its sequence *-jijaz?
The etymology of the attested Gothic form -wiljis would be:
PIE *wΓ©lhβ- + *(Γ)-yΓ³s > *wΓ©lhβyos > PGmc *wiljaz > Gothic π πΉπ»πΎπΉπ. The change of *-jaz to -πΎπΉπ is consistent with the Gothic reflexes of *aljaz, *harjaz, *niwjaz, *niΓΎjaz and *midjaz.
Therefore, on the assumption the word was formed in PIE: *selbawiljaz.
Even if the word was formed later, with a resegmented *wilj-anΔ + *-ijaz, Ringe shows *-ji- > -i- in Late PGmc. In that case: *wiljijaz > *wilijaz, which sits at odds with the results of Sievers > *wiljaz (again).
Therefore, on the assumption the word was formed in PGmc: *selbawiljaz.
A parallel consideration is whether Gothic silbawiljos, 'volunteers' is a calque of Greek Ξ±α½ΞΈΞ±Ξ―ΟΞ΅ΟΞΏΞΉ. It may be genuinely Germanic, given ON sjΓ‘lfvili, 'free-will' and critically the possible runic inscription in Younger Futhark ααα αα α’ααα.

- @David Patrick 50 Correct. I think the person who added that Proto-Germanic form may have made a typo, as we actually have an entry at *selbawiljaz. β Mnemosientje (t Β· c) 07:25, 23 July 2024 (UTC)
