For an interesting discussion of the correctness/popularity of using American to refer to the USA see w:Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style#American. It'd be nice if we could get statistics and better dates for this entry. --Bequw¢τ 22:26, 28 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

the example in the second meaning is derogatory to Mexicans. 205.204.22.1 17:59, 29 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
It shows the distinction between "inhabitant of the Americas" and "inhabitant of the United States of America". - -sche (discuss) 18:56, 29 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

The word "Rare" should probably be put in front of the first definition in English

edit

As this title says, the first english definition "A person form the Americas" should have the word "rare" or maybe even "archiac" next to it, as the vast majority of native english speakers never use the word in that way. If you try to use that word in that way when speaking to someone who speaks English, chances are they will think you're talking about someone from the united states and won't even consider that you're using the word as a demonym for the Americas because that's generally not what the word means in english. Using that definition without some kind of disclaimer is pretty misinformative. Wisconsinite1848 (talk) 01:58, 10 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
