Reading a bit more about it, it seems that the doomsday argument was "discovered" independently by a few people, and Brandon Carter never wanted to take credit for it, so he had someone else publish the argument for him. The definition should reflect this somehow, as the argument that was used by Carter in his lectures, before it was formally published. Carter himself suggested the name "Carter-Leslie doomsday argument" be used. So maybe it's a bit of both, an early/informal name and an early (unpublished) version.
