According to the Wikipedia article on Hispaniola, it appears the English name, Hispaniola, comes from Latin, not Spanish. This seems especially likely, since the English word is spelled the same as the Latin word. Grosbach (talk) 21:12, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
- You're probably right, but it does raise a new question: in which language was the island originally named? Did Columbus write the name in Latin originally or in Spanish? —CodeCat 21:16, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
Again, according the the Wikipedia article, he named the island in both Latin and Spanish, presumably not an uncommon practice at the time. Grosbach (talk) 21:18, 25 August 2016 (UTC) Btw, it seems Columbus didn't use the word Hispaniola. Grosbach (talk) 21:22, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
