Inherited?

@Nicodene Sicilian /ggj/ stands for an original /ʎʎ/, never for /kkj/. I presume this is a borrowing from Occitan, like the Italian aguglia. Catonif (talk) 13:36, 9 November 2022 (UTC)

@Nicodene: I'm not sure. Given how Occitan speakers fled to Sicily in the Middle Ages, it could very well be the opposite. The fact that in Sicilian this is the most basic term for "needle", where in the rest of Italy that sense is merely a poetic Provenzalism is also something to note, though I'm not sure what it implies.
