Chambers 1908 has "de = down + liquēre = to melt", which seems more relevant. Equinox 15:17, 22 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

The OED splits this into two etyms, both from deliquium (one from Classical Latin and another from post-Classical Latin), one coming from delinquere and another from deliquare. Andrew Sheedy (talk) 04:36, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
