@Angr, Wikipedia claims this comes from Old Irish escir. Is that true? —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 07:29, 11 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Metaknowledge, yes, but I don't know where escir comes from. —Aɴɢʀ (talk) 07:34, 11 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Angr: Hmm, I see. And does an older stage of Irish explain the pronunciation of esker? Or a dialectal form? —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 15:59, 11 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Metaknowledge, you mean why it's esker and not eshker? Not really; it's probably more that -shk- doesn't occur in native English words and so feels foreign to English speakers. The same thing happened in uisce > whiskey. —Aɴɢʀ (talk) 17:18, 11 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Angr: Thanks for the explanation. It's good to know more etymological background for the jargon I use. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 18:32, 11 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
