"The top level professional league of sporting competition" - not in any sport I follow. Is this a regional thing somewhere? I see that there are leagues out there called "elite x league" and similar, but that is just the name of the particular league. Is this used generically? - TheDaveRoss 20:34, 23 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

But isn’t this just SOP? There are also elite athletes who compete in elite teams in elite sports. I think it simply means, generically, “top-level”, as can also be applied to an elite team of Navy SEALs or an elite team of mathematicians.  --Lambiam 13:13, 25 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
Those cites also don't cover this sense, except maybe the Russian hockey one. Two are not professional (Canada and Nigeria) and between those neither is the "top" level of the sport in the respective domain. The term is certainly used a lot, the question is whether it has the general meaning "The top level professional league of sporting competition". For lots of sports and in lots of regions there are "elite leagues" which are for young amateurs, I know of a few around here. Contrast La Liga or the Premier League or Bundesliga or the NFL, NBA, MLB, or NHL, none of which refer to themselves as "elite leagues", despite being unequivocally the top level of professional sport in their areas. - TheDaveRoss 13:36, 25 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
Should go to RFD as SoP I suppose. Equinox 21:32, 25 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

RFV-passed. Someone may wish to send this to RFV as NISOP. Kiwima (talk) 13:48, 2 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

I don't agree that this has passed, as mentioned above. The cites given don't support the sense. - TheDaveRoss 15:47, 2 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
I don't understand why this means anything more than "elite" + "league". I agree with Equinox that it should be assessed on that basis at RFD. Mihia (talk) 19:03, 12 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Appears to mean no more than "elite" + "league". Previously considered at RFV. Mihia (talk) 19:05, 12 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Delete as SOP. Old Man Consequences (talk) 15:07, 26 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
