I think it refers to the Archilochus colubris or ruby-throated hummingbird (as referenced in the Also see... part). It is in the genus Archilochus.

Plenty of Books hits for gorget and hummer on the same page, but not in the same term. Probably the referent would be the ruby-throated hummingbird or rufous-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris), a common hummingbird in the eastern US.

Yes, the Webster 1913 text said "see rubythroat" and (as I remember) their "see" usually meant it was a synonym. Equinox 19:32, 20 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
