"compare swindle" ? edit

This page's etymology says, of the phonological change from graft to grift, "The lighter sound (⟨a⟩ → ⟨i⟩, /ɑː/ or /æ/ → /ɪ/) is associated with more subtle, sophisticated crime; compare swindle." But swindle's etymology section describes it as ultimately derived from a German word which already had /ɪ/ where swindle does, so it doesn't seem to be an example of this. - 2601:80:4580:E0E0:6473:A28C:9A8F:FDB4 20:57, 19 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
