Etymology the Word "Liming" (Caribbean Slang)

edit

The word "liming" in the Caribbean is said to come from the British sailors being referred to as "Limeys". While sailing on the ocean for long periods of time, Scurvy- a disease resulting from deficiency in vitamin C- was very prominent. To combat this disease, limes were consumed due to their richness in vitamin C. They were said to gather together to eat limes thus the use of the word "liming" supposedly came about to the local Caribbeans with the meaning of gathering and hanging out with friends. The entry already mentions limey. Equinox 21:17, 4 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
It doesn't mention the gathering aspect though. Kristenkenny (talk) 21:21, 4 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
source: my mother went to school in the 1930s in Trinidad and Tobago and this is what was told to her by her history professors. Kristenkenny (talk) 21:23, 4 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
