Greens dictionary of slang connects the computer etymology to a mundane sense that might underlie sense 2: here. there is also Urban Dictionary, talking about various things, and there is just maybe a slight chance of a valid connection to MIT if it was coined by students who remembered a term from high school, particularly one that might not have been widely understood outside their generation and social group. see also talk:munting (which really should be munt, but perhaps the verb isnt citable). If these two words are variant forms, then everything i said there also applies here. i grew up in Massachusetts, and it may be that mung is a variant of munt that was common in that area, yet obscure enough that college students could sneak it into computer user manuals and then shrug and explain it as an acronym.
