Isn't there also the sense of "to exploit existing rules" or "to follow existing rules opportunistically, even against standards of honesty or decency?" Longman seems to have a definition somewhat similar to this. Imetsia (talk) 17:01, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
- Probably. I think "the game" can have a wider sense of "the usual practice; whatever is conventionally done", so if breaking the rules is what people usually do then you are playing the game by breaking them. Equinox ◑ 17:13, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
