Although the historical practice can probably clearly be traced to Italy, the English word itself is first attested in reference to French practices and using the French spelling. It's probably best to treat this the same way that the OED does: everything from Latin quarentena in a messy process of piecemeal and reduplicated transmissions through Norman French-cum-Middle English, French proper, and Italian. — LlywelynII 17:09, 9 April 2022 (UTC)
