Etymology

Appears in Chambers 1908 as a variant of snirtle, which makes me suspicious of the snort + chortle blend etymology, chortle being a Carroll coinage from Alice in Wonderland, and blends of this kind not being especially common back then. Equinox 19:32, 1 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
