Auction slang

Some sources (e.g. Green's Newspeak [1984] and Cassady's Auctions and Auctioneering) mention a slang term "trotting" referring to some kind of fraud in auctions, where (as far as I can make out) the auctioneer pretends to have more bidders than really exist, to drive up the price.
