Etymology

edit

How does the term "vaudeville" derive from the English term "bawdy village" when the term "vaudeville" existed in France in the late 17th century?

That etymology looks pretty dodgy (at the very least, referring in a modern etymology to something as "a corruption" of something else is never a good sign), so I've replaced it with a Request For Etymology, but it'll probably be a good while until someone gets to it.
