Etymology

First attested as tateler in 1431. Initially the name of a field derived from Middle Dutch tatelen (“to shake”) or a compound of taten (“to shake”) and laar (“intensively cultivated forest”). In both etymologies the name refers to the field's damp, unstable soil.
