Parameters

edit

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1= or |volume=mandatory: the volume number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, from |volume=I to |volume=XVII.
  • |2=, |chapter=, or |title=mandatory in some cases: in some cases, if the page number is specified the template can determine the title quoted from. If it is unable to do so, specify the name of the title. If quoting from a title indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:
The Works of Lord Byron

  • |author= – if quoting from a part of the work by the editor (for example, a footnote), specify |author=Moore.
  • |date=, or (|month= and) |year= – if the title or part of the work quoted from is separately dated and the date is not indicated by the template, use |date= to specify it in the format 22 January 1788 or January 22, 1788. If only the month and year, or year alone, of the sermon is known, use |month= and/or |year= to specify this information.
  • |stanza= and/or |footnote= – the stanza and/or footnote number quoted from, in Arabic or uppercase Roman numerals as the case may be.
  • |3= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from in Arabic or lowercase Roman numerals, as the case may be. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11 or |pages=x–xi.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the title quoted from, and to link to an online version of the work.
  • |4=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
