Usage

edit

This template may be used on Wikipedia entry pages to quote John Gower's work Confessio Amantis (written c. 1386–1390, published 1857, 3 volumes). The template can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at Google Books:

Parameters

edit

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1= or |volume=mandatory: the volume number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, either |volume=I, |volume=II, or |volume=III.
  • |2=, |book=, or |chapter= – the main part of the work is divided into eight books; use |2= or |book= indicate the book number in uppercase Roman numerals, from |book=I to |book=VIII. If quoting from some other part of the work, specify the chapter name using |chapter=.
  • |3= or |page=; or |pages= – the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=110–111.
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to enable the template to link to the online version of the work.
  • |4=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage quoted from the work.
  • |5=, |t=, or |translation= – a translation of the passage quoted into contemporary English.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
  • |termlang= – by default, the template categorizes entries on which it is placed into Category:Middle English terms with quotations. To have the template categorize an entry into Category:English terms with quotations instead, use |termlang=en.
