Usage
editThis template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from James Howell's work S.P.Q.V.: A Survay of the Signorie of Venice (1st edition, 1651). It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the Internet Archive.
Parameters
editThe template takes the following parameters:
|1=
or|chapter=
– the name of the chapter quoted from. If quoting from one of the chapters indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:
Parameter value | Result |
---|---|
Dedication | To the Supreme Authority of the Nation, the Parlement of England |
Looking-glasse | A Short Analysis of the Whole Peece. A Venice Looking-glasse, wherin that Rare and Renowned City and Signory is Represented in Her Tru Colours, […] |

- As the above chapters are unpaginated, use
|2=
or|page=
to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL ishttps://archive.org/details/spqvsurvayofsign00howe/page/n10/mode/1up
, specify|page=10
.
|2=
or|page=
, or|pages=
– mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:- Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this:
|pages=10–11
. - You must also use
|pageref=
to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
- Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this:
- You must specify this information to have the template link to the online version of the work.
There are a number of pagination errors; the text is unaffected:
- Page 161 is misprinted as 163; specify it as
|page=161
.- After page 177, page numbers 178–182 are not used and the next page is 183.
- After page 198, the page numbering restarts from 175. If quoting the second set of pages 175–177 and 183–198, specify
|page=175A
to|page=177A
and|page=183A
to|page=198A
.
|3=
,|text=
, or|passage=
– the passage to be quoted.|footer=
– a comment on the passage quoted.|brackets=
– use|brackets=on
to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
