Template:RQ:Verne Twenty Thousand Leagues

Usage edit

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote an anonymous English translation of Jules Verne's work Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea (reprint of the 1st American edition, 1873); the 1st edition (London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low, & Searle, 1873; →OCLC) translated by Louis Page Mercier is not currently available online. The template can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the HathiTrust Digital Library.

Parameters edit

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1= or |chapter= – the name of the chapter quoted from.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages= – the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=110–111.
  • |url=, or |3= or |pageref=mandatory in some cases: the HathiTrust Digital Library has assigned numbers to each page of the work in the URLs of the webpages of the work, but they do not correspond in a convenient way to the page numbers printed in the work. Therefore, you must either:
    • use |url= to specify the URL of the webpage to be linked to, like this: |url=https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015004307362&view=1up&seq=33; or
    • use |3= or |pageref= to specify the HathiTrust "page" to be linked to, which is indicated as a number preceded by a hash or hex symbol ("#") on the website. This number also appears in the URL; for example, if the URL of the webpage to be linked to is https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015004307362&view=1up&seq=33, specify |pageref=33.
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.
  • |4=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage quoted from the work.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
