English hyphens edit

Do not move English entries to page titles with "–". DTLHS (talk) 21:10, 22 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Why not? Cherkash (talk) 23:40, 22 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Because no other entries use that character in the page title, and if such a thing is going to be done it's going to be done universally and certainly not at the whims of one individual editor. DTLHS (talk) 01:34, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
And how would you propose such a universal moving to be done? There's certainly no way to automate this: there can't be no "replace all hyphens with dashes" rule or some such. Is there a good reason you oppose moving articles one by one, as it's done e.g. on English wiki? I.e. surely some degree of automation could possibly be done, but the rest is done whenever individual editors encounter pages that need to be moved. Cherkash (talk) 01:41, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Of course it can be automated: I could write a script to do it in minutes (actually running that script would take a while). I'm obviously not doing that because there is no consensus to do so. There are no "pages that need to be moved." If you continue to move pages you will be blocked. DTLHS (talk) 01:43, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
I don't think you got my point. Here's what I was trying to say: there are many legitimate reasons for each of the two (both hyphen and dash). So how would you differentiate between those in an automated fashion?? Cherkash (talk) 01:45, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
There is no need to differentiate them because all English titles use a hyphen. DTLHS (talk) 01:46, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Well.... that's quite a claim! Why don't you familiarize yourself with the typographic tradition and different use cases for hyphens, en- and em-dashes? English wiki's WP:MOS (specifically, MOS:DASH and MOS:HYPHEN) would be a good start for a study on the subject. Meanwhile, if I misunderstood your statement – and you actually meant to say something like "there is a policy on English Wiktionary to use only hyphens in the article titles" – could you point me in the right direction? Cherkash (talk) 02:04, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
I am perfectly familiar with all applicable typographic traditions. We do not follow any of them in entry titles. "All English titles use a hyphen" is a statement of fact. You may refer to Wiktionary:Entry titles if you want something written down. If you would like to challenge this policy you should make a thread in the Beer Parlour. Neither the page you mentioned, nor the list of exception linked there, mentions any dashes as being inappropriate to use in article titles. In fact, the only mention of any dash is in the phrase "In most languages, the HYPHEN-MINUS is used for the hyphen, not any of the dashes." – which just says (although in an awkward way) that dashes shouldn't be used where hyphen is meant. It definitely doesn't say "substitute hyphen for everywhere dash is normally used". Hence my question again: what's your reason to insist on avoiding dashes altogether? Cherkash (talk) 02:22, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
I already explained to you the reason and the place where you can direct further inquiries. DTLHS (talk) 02:23, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I've created a thread in the Beer Parlour. Feel free to comment there. Cherkash (talk) 02:41, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
