From Old Portuguese Vaasquez, from Old Galician-Portuguese Veasquez, from an earlier Velasquiz, from Belasco +‎ -ez, meaning "son/daughter of Belasco".[1] Velasco or Belasco are Romance forms of a name in a pre-Roman substrate of Iberia.

Cognate with Portuguese Vasques, Spanish Velázquez and Blázquez.
