Dutch edit

Etymology edit

Potentially attested as wastrode in 1139, attested with certainty as vaesrode in 1230. Derived from a compound of Latin vastum (wasteland) and rode (land cleared of trees). The popular interpretation of the first element as a derivation from the name of Saint Servatius of Tongeren is incorrect.
