From vor- (“before, ahead of”) + Pommern (“Pomerania”), thus “that part of Pomerania that is closer to the German centre”.
Proper noun edit
Vorpommern n (proper noun, genitive Vorpommerns or (optionally with an article) Vorpommern)
- Western Pomerania (portion of Pomerania to the west of the Oder river, mostly in Germany)
- Coordinate term: Hinterpommern
Usage notes edit
- The city of Stettin/Szczecin and the Polish territories to its north and west are geographically part of Vorpommern, but since 1945 the term may also be restricted, in a political sense, to the German part of Pomerania.
